The word "unschooling" was coined by author and educator John Holt, appearing for the first time in issue #2 of his newsletter, Growing Without Schooling, published in November, 1977. Holt wrote, "GWS will say 'unschooling' when we mean taking children out of school..." but before long the term was being used to indicate any non-schoolish approach to learning. Over the years, unschooling has come to mean a more relaxed, casual form of homeschooling to many people, but there are bona fide unschoolers who use textbooks and curricula - the truest definition is more of a mindset than anything else.
With this Unschooling.com site we're hoping to support and defend and promote and encourage unschooling in all its many shapes and forms. We're creating a haven for unschooling families, a place to find answers, to meet friends, to discover resources, to read affirming essays when one needs uplifting. We welcome your suggestions and ideas, and we celebrate your family's unschooling adventures!
We're happy to have you stop by; make yourself at home. It will be nice to have a place where we can talk without constantly explaining what unschooling is and defending our choices. A place where we can share the joys and troubles amongst other unschoolers, and not have to fend off well meaning questions of "But what if they never get interested in anything?"
What if you aren't an unschooler? You're welcome to come here and browse, read what people have to say, and share your own experiences. Read through the FAQ, the essays, and the personal unschooling definitions.
